About this recipe. A starting moisturising facial gel for evaluating Siligel as the main gelling agent in a light aqueous formula. The recipe aims for a fresh texture that spreads easily and has good initial stability, without turning it into a cream or loading it with a fatty phase.

Why these ingredients are used.

  • Siligel is the main ingredient: it provides structure, viscosity and a more elegant feel than an overly runny aqueous gel.
  • Glycerine and propanediol act as humectants and help give a more comfortable feeling of hydration.
  • D-Panthenol W75 is incorporated for cosmetic comfort support at a normal formulation usage level.
  • Geogard 221 / Cosgard preserves the aqueous phase, provided that the final formula is within its pH range.
  • The citric acid solution is used only for adjustment, drop by drop, to the final pH.

Step by step

Before weighing anything, clean and disinfect the worktop, utensils, stirring rod or mixer and final container. In an aqueous formula, the main enemy is usually contamination rather than technique.

Mix the humectants 2 Room temperature

Mix the humectants

Weigh the water in a clean beaker. Add the glycerine and propanediol, and mix until there are no denser areas or unincorporated streaks. This mixture helps the final gel feel better on the skin.

Sprinkle the Siligel gradually over the aqueous phase while mixing. Do not pour it all in at once, as it may form lumps that are dry on the outside and wet on the inside.

Keep mixing until the gel starts to develop body. If you have a stirrer, use constant agitation. If mixing by hand, alternate circular movements with short pauses so that the powder hydrates thoroughly.

Once the gel is uniform, add the D-Panthenol W75 and mix until incorporated. Then add the Geogard 221 / Cosgard and mix slowly again, avoiding introducing too much air.

Measure the pH. If it is above the target range, add a 20% citric acid solution drop by drop, mix and measure again. Do not adjust by eye: one drop can make a big difference in 100 g.

Leave the gel to rest for 24 hours before judging its final viscosity. Siligel may finish developing body the next day, so do not adjust the texture too soon.

Package in a clean container, preferably an airless container or one with a dispenser. Apply a small amount to clean skin. If this is an initial test, make a small quantity and observe the smell, colour, texture and tolerance over several days.

Preservation, shelf life and validation

  • Indicative formula. It does not replace a safety assessment or stability testing.
  • Disinfect the utensils, worktop and container before starting.
  • Always measure the final pH. If you cannot measure the pH, do not consider the formula finished.
