Description

Like other citrus trees, the bitter orange tree came to Europe from Asia. It was introduced to Spain by the Arabs in the XI century and planted both for ornamental purposes and for its exquisite, fragrant blossom.
Citrus blossom is known in Spanish as azahar, a word of Arabic origin meaning white flower.

The therapeutic properties of these trees have long been known. They form part of the natural pharmacopoeia of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda.
For the Chinese, the fruit attracted good luck and symbolised prosperity and fertility.

The bitter orange tree gives us three aromatic oils: “petit grain” is extracted from its leaves, its flowers yield the wonderful orange blossom essential oil known as neroli, and an essence is also extracted from its fruit. The French term “petit grain” means “little grain”. It is so called because the essential oil is extracted when the still-green fruits are about the size of an olive.

The delicate aroma of petitgrain essential oil is both fresh and floral. It is very comforting and calms the nerves. It is particularly valued in perfumery.

Bitter orange essential oil has considerable therapeutic value and is probably one of the most valuable essential oils for tackling stress.
