Description

For many years, the lemon tree, like other citrus trees, was said to originate possibly from China or India. However, in 2000, phylogenetic studies revealed that the lemon tree originates from China and the Mediterranean, resulting from a hybridisation between bitter orange (Citrus aurantium) and citron (Citrus x medica) that occurred in the V century BC.

Lemons have been part of the human diet since time immemorial. Distinguished physicians of Antiquity described their medicinal properties, and the fruit is still highly valued for its therapeutic qualities, particularly in relation to the digestive system.

Lemon essence is mainly extracted from the peel by cold pressing, but essential oil is also extracted from the leaves.
