Description
Marjoram is native to the Mediterranean basin, although some sources mention Asian origins. In any case, it has been cultivated since ancient times and is used as a spice in many parts of the world.Legend has it that the goddess Aphrodite created this plant to symbolise good fortune. Egyptians have cultivated it for more than 3000 years. It was dedicated to the god Osiris and used alongside other plants to embalm the dead. It was also placed in tombs to protect the deceased from evil spirits.
The Greeks valued the plant and used it for head massages to keep the mind calm.
They also adorned newlyweds' heads with it, believing it would ensure the young couple's happiness and fertility.
Its essential oil offers numerous therapeutic properties and possible applications. It is known for its harmonising and balancing action on the autonomic nervous system, making it one of the most useful essential oils for relieving autonomic dysfunction.
Its aroma is very pleasant and refreshing. It is particularly suitable for massages to relieve muscle tension and stress.
Marjoram (origanum majorana) should not be confused with oregano (origanum compactum) or with the plant misleadingly called wild marjoram or Spanish marjoram (Thymus mastichina).
