Description

Black pepper is native to India, where it is widely used and is one of the best-known Ayurvedic plants. It is also grown in Madagascar.
It is a climbing plant that can reach tens of metres in length.

There is evidence that pepper was already used in Europe in antiquity. Some sources suggest that Alexander the Great may have introduced black pepper to Europe.

In the Middle Ages, black pepper was worth its weight in gold, and owning it was a sign of wealth and opulence.

Today, pepper is used mainly for its culinary qualities, but it also has many therapeutic properties. The fruit has analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. Piperine is known for improving intestinal absorption of substances taken with it, such as turmeric.
Its essential oil shares some of these properties, but does not contain piperine.

Black pepper essential oil has a lovely, pleasant, slightly spicy and refreshing aroma.
