Description
Wormwood is a perennial herbaceous plant about 60 centimetres tall. It grows naturally in Europe, Siberia and central and western Asia. It has been introduced to North America, where it has adapted very well. It can be found at altitudes of up to 2000 metres.The plant was already known for its therapeutic properties in Antiquity. It was used in Egypt, Greece and Celtic regions.
Later, the Arabs used it to counteract hemlock poisoning and scorpion or spider bites.
It was also used to treat tonsillitis, eye infections and haemorrhoids.
The famous absinthe liqueur emerged at the end of the 16th century. Excessive use caused disorders due to the toxicity of the essential oil, even causing hallucinations and convulsions. Its sale was banned from 1915. Since 1988, its manufacture has been permitted provided that the percentage of thujone and other ketones present is controlled to avoid toxicity.
Use of the plant has been abandoned because of its potential toxicity.
Use of wormwood essential oil requires professional supervision.

Botanical name: Artemisia absinthium - Family: Asteraceae - Genus: Artemisia
A herbaceous perennial plant with a hard, woody rhizome and upright stems. It grows to between 80 and 120 cm (rarely 150 cm) and is silvery green. The spirally arranged leaves are grey-green above and white below, covered with silvery-white hairs and oil-producing glands. Basal leaves are up to 25 cm long, bi- to tripinnate, with long stalks; the stem leaves are smaller, 5 to 10 cm long, less divided and short-stalked. The upper leaves may be simple and sessile (without a stalk). The involucral bracts are grey-green and densely hairy. The flowers are pale yellow and tubular, grouped in flower heads, which in turn form leafy, bracted panicles.
