Description
Frankincense is a resin produced by a small tree belonging to the Burseraceae family and the genus Boswellia. These trees live in very dry, rocky places with extreme climatic conditions. The Spanish word incienso comes from the Latin incensum, meaning to light.
In India, as in other countries where this tree grows, its resin has been used for both religious and therapeutic purposes.
Frankincense is mentioned around a hundred times in the Bible. It was one of the gifts the Three Wise Men presented to the baby Jesus, along with myrrh and gold.
It is still burned in temples and churches during religious rituals today.
In the Middle Ages, it was already used to promote wound healing, and was also thought to strengthen eyesight and memory. In India, it was used to treat rheumatic conditions. Traditionally, fumigation was used to disinfect living spaces.
The resin is extracted by making small cuts in the tree bark, and the essential oil is obtained from it.
Boswellia serrata grows mainly in India, but is also found in Africa and the Middle East. It is sometimes called Ayurvedic frankincense or salai frankincense.
Indian frankincense essential oil has a gentle aroma with a slight citrus note. Like other frankincense essential oils, it invites us to savour a moment of peace and calm. It is particularly suitable for accompanying meditation.
