Description
Disodium Cocoamphodiacetate
An amphoteric surfactant derived from coconut fatty acids, suitable for formulating mild cosmetic cleansers, gels, shampoos, facial cleansers, products for delicate skin and formulas intended to improve foam and the feeling of mildness.
It can be used as a secondary surfactant in combined systems, helping make the formula milder, improve its sensory profile and contribute to foam stability.
Characteristics
- Amphoteric surfactant.
- Dry residue: 45% - 55%.
- Very soluble in water.
- Readily soluble in ethanol and oils according to the technical data sheet.
- Ecocert-certified according to the available documentation.
- Without preservatives.
- Suitable for mild cleansing formulas.
INCI
Disodium Cocoamphodiacetate, Aqua.
Technical data
- CAS number: 742087-49-6.
- EINECS number: 664-492-4.
- pH: 8,0 - 9,0 in a 20% solution at 20 ºC.
- Sodium chloride: 9% - 12%.
- Relative density: 1,118 - 1,163 at 20 ºC according to the SDS.
Indicative use in formulation
It can be incorporated into rinse-off products such as shower gels, shampoos, facial cleansers, shaving creams and formulas for delicate skin. The use level must be adjusted according to the total surfactant system, desired active matter level, final pH and formula tolerance.
Formulation and storage precautions
- Avoid nitrosating agents and containers containing nitrites.
- If stored at low temperatures for a long time, warm gently and homogenise before use.
- Keep tightly closed in a cool, dry, ventilated place, away from sunlight and heat sources.
- Handle the concentrated product without splashing it into the eyes; the SDS classifies it as presenting a risk of serious eye damage.
- Final formulas must be tested and validated before use or marketing.

General step-by-step method
Phase 1 - Preparation
- Disinfect utensils, containers and the work surface.
- Weigh the ingredients separately and prepare for pH adjustment.
- Handle the concentrated product without splashing it into the eyes.
Phase 2 - Gelling
- Disperse the xanthan gum in the glycerine where included.
- Gradually add the water and mix until hydrated.
- Allow to stand if bubbles or an uneven texture appear.
Phase 3 - Surfactants
- Add the surfactants slowly, starting with the glucosides.
- Incorporate Disodium Cocoamphodiacetate while mixing gently.
- Avoid whisking so as not to introduce air or excessive foam.
Phase 4 - Preservation, pH and standing
- Add the preservative and mix to distribute it.
- Measure the pH and adjust drop by drop if necessary.
- Allow to stand for 24 hours before assessing viscosity, foam, clarity and initial stability.
Validation note
These recipes are starting formulations. Before manufacturing for others or marketing, stability, preservation, packaging compatibility, labelling and compliance with the regulations applicable to the product type must be validated.
