Suitable for shower gels, shampoos, facial cleansers, products for delicate skin and formulas seeking effective cleansing with good skin tolerance.
Characteristics
- Non-ionic surfactant.
- Active matter: 51% ± 1%.
- Very soluble in water.
- Readily soluble in ethanol and oils according to the technical data sheet.
- Without preservatives.
- Plant origin.
- Useful for mild, biodegradable formulas.
INCI
Decyl Glucoside.
Technical data
- CAS number: 68515-73-1.
- EINECS number: 500-220-1.
- pH: 11,5 - 12,5 in a 20% solution at 20 ºC.
- Viscosity at 20 ºC: ≥ 1000 mPas.
- Sodium chloride: ≤ 3%.
Indicative use in formulation
It can be used as a primary or secondary surfactant in gels, shampoos and cleansers. The use level must be adjusted according to the formula's total active matter, skin or hair type, final pH, viscosity and other surfactants used.
Formulation and storage precautions
- Avoid containers containing nitrites.
- Do not store below 5 ºC; if it becomes cloudy, heat indirectly and homogenise.
- Keep tightly closed in a cool, dry, ventilated place, away from sunlight and heat sources.
- As it contains no preservative, check product quality after opening.
- Final formulas must be tested and validated before use or marketing.

General step-by-step method
Phase 1 - Preparation
- Disinfect utensils, containers and the work surface.
- Weigh all ingredients and prepare diluted citric acid for pH adjustment.
- Stir gently to avoid excessive foam.
Phase 2 - Gelling
- Disperse the xanthan gum in the glycerine where included.
- Gradually add the water and mix until hydrated.
- Allow to stand if needed to remove bubbles or complete hydration.
Phase 3 - Surfactants
- Slowly add Decyl Glucoside and the remaining surfactants.
- Mix with a spatula or stirring rod, without a blender, until homogeneous.
- Avoid incorporating air so the initial viscosity reading is not altered.
Phase 4 - Preservation, pH and standing
- Add the preservative and mix to distribute it.
- Adjust the pH slowly and record the final value.
- Allow to stand for 24 hours before assessing viscosity, foam and initial stability.
Validation note
These recipes are starting formulations. Before manufacturing for others or marketing, stability, preservation, packaging compatibility, labelling and compliance with the regulations applicable to the product type must be validated.
