Description
The difference between this Citric Acid Monohydrate and Anhydrous Citric Acid (also available here) is the water molecule associated with its chemical formula. It is useful for most applications in products such as bath bombs or bath salts, but contains 10% less citric acid than the anhydrous version.
This gives it a somewhat coarser texture and also makes it more economical. It is an organic acid present in most fruits, particularly citrus fruits such as lemons, limes, oranges and grapefruits.
It has preservative properties in cosmetics.
It is a white or almost white crystalline material, supplied as efflorescent crystals or granules. It is odourless.
Very soluble in water and readily soluble in 96% ethanol.
Properties and Uses of Citric Acid Monohydrate
Recommended for acne-prone, combination and oily skin.
Inhibits the enzymatic breakdown of sweat, preventing unpleasant odours and making it ideal for deodorants and deodorising cleansing gels.
For deodorant use, the finished product must have a pH between 4-5 for it to work.
Increases the effectiveness of preservatives used in products and acts synergistically to enhance antioxidant performance.
Applied directly to the skin, it acts as an AHA and produces an exfoliating effect that helps improve wrinkles and stretch marks.
It also improves skin cleansing, making it ideal for acne because it unblocks pores and helps tighten enlarged pores.
A disinfectant for the feet or mouth.
Regulates pH through its acidifying action.
Anti-dark-spot and depigmenting.
It can be used to make gels, creams, lotions and deodorants...
To incorporate it, heat it in the oil phase or add it to the finished product.
However, if you want your homemade cosmetics containing citric acid to be more effective, we recommend Anhydrous Citric Acid: less is needed to adjust pH, and it also gives better results in skin applications.
Recommended Dosage
Between 1-5%.
