Description
NON-Ethoxylated SCI, Certified.
A biodegradable, sulphate-free, non-ethoxylated anionic surfactant derived from coconut oil.
Ideal for making solid shampoo or shaving foams, as it produces plenty of foam without drying out the skin or scalp.
It can be used as the main surfactant or combined with other anionic surfactants. Its pH is between 5 and 6 and varies by batch (as marked on the product label).
Minimum 80% salt, the highest SCI quality.
As it is a very fine powder, wearing a mask when handling it is recommended.
About ethoxylation:
SCI can only be produced by esterification, not ethoxylation. Therefore, no ethylene oxide or similar residues will remain in the final product.
If you have read that ethoxylated SCI exists or that traces of ethylene oxide were found in another brand's technical data sheet, you can be reassured about this concern. Ethylene oxide and related compounds are safe in both cosmetics and food at concentrations below 10ppm, although of course we would always prefer them not to be present in our cosmetics.
So why do some technical data sheets mention possible traces?
Just as a food product may warn of possible traces of other products because many foods are processed in the same factory, the warning about the possibility (not actual presence, only a possibility) of ethylene oxide in SCI at a concentration below 1ppm (completely insignificant and safe for any organism) arises because ethoxylated products are processed in the same factory and microscopic cross-contamination may occur.
As ethylene oxide is a closely controlled substance, if the final product contained it, this would be reflected in the INCI, safety data sheet and technical data sheet.
If you still have doubts, SCI is listed in the global chemicals database as a non-toxic product, with a score of 1 out of 10 (1 being the safest and 10 very dangerous).
