Technical data
- CAS number: 68515-73-1.
- EINECS number: 500-220-1.
- pH: 11,5 - 12,5 in a 20% solution at 20 ºC.
- Viscosity at 20 ºC: ≥ 2000 mPas.
- Sodium chloride: ≤ 3%.
Indicative use in formulation
It can be used in rinse-off formulas such as gels, shampoos, facial cleansers and hygiene products. The use level must be adjusted according to the total surfactant system, desired active matter level, final pH, viscosity and formula tolerance.
Formulation and storage precautions
- Avoid containers containing nitrites.
- Do not store below 5 ºC; if it becomes cloudy, heat indirectly and homogenise.
- Keep tightly closed in a cool, dry, ventilated place, away from sunlight and heat sources.
- As it contains no preservative, check product quality after opening.
- Final formulas must be tested and validated before use or marketing.

General step-by-step method
Phase 1 - Preparation
- Disinfect utensils, containers and the work surface.
- Weigh all ingredients separately.
- Prepare a 20% citric acid solution to adjust the pH drop by drop.
Phase 2 - Gelling
- Disperse the xanthan gum in the glycerine where the formula includes it.
- Gradually add the water and mix until the gum is hydrated.
- Allow to stand if lumps or bubbles appear.
Phase 3 - Surfactants
- Incorporate the surfactants slowly and mix without whisking to avoid excessive foam.
- If the formula includes alcohol, add it at the end of this phase and mix again.
- Homogenise with gentle movements until the mixture is uniform.
Phase 4 - Preservation, pH and standing
- Add the preservative and mix to distribute it well.
- Measure the pH and adjust gradually if necessary.
- Allow to stand for 24 hours before assessing viscosity, foam, transparency and initial stability.
Validation note
These recipes are starting formulations. Before manufacturing for others or marketing, stability, preservation, packaging compatibility, labelling and compliance with the regulations applicable to the product type must be validated.
