Description

Java pepper or cubeb pepper is a climbing plant in the Piperaceae family and, as its name suggests, is native to the island of Java. Its leaves are leathery and pointed, and its small, white flowers are arranged in a hanging spike. The berries grow in clusters, each containing a seed which, when ripe, is dried and ground to produce a spice with less body than pepper.

The name Cubeb comes from the Arabic "kubbaba", whose meaning remains a mystery. The Arabic name "kubbaba" is thought to come from a vernacular language of Java that disappeared long ago.
The Chinese have used this pepper since Antiquity as a medicinal plant to treat respiratory illnesses. The plant is almost unknown in Europe, yet cubeb is widely used as a spice in Indonesia and forms part of the "ras-el-hanout" spice blend well known in North Africa.

Cubeb pepper essential oil is obtained by distilling the dried fruits.
