Description

Lovage, also called mountain celery, may originate from Persia, which is also the native region of its relative galbanum.
It rarely grows spontaneously, so it is very unlikely to be found in the wild.
Lovage is very similar to celery, although it is often said to be hardier.
The Greeks and Romans ate it with other aromatic plants and chewed its seeds.
Its medicinal properties have been known for centuries.
Hildegard of Bingen praised the purifying properties of its seeds and recommended them for gastric, intestinal and respiratory disorders. It was also known as an effective remedy for urinary retention and as an emmenagogue, easing difficult births.

Lovage is better known in countries such as Germany and Switzerland, where it is commonly grown and eaten.
Lovage essential oil is extracted from the roots and fruit-bearing aerial parts.

It is highly specific, and its very distinctive, decidedly unpleasant aroma restricts its use to oral administration under professional supervision.
