Description

Gingergrass essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the fresh grass of Cymbopogon martini var. sofia. It has a fresh, green, slightly sweet aromatic profile, with woody and earthy nuances that make it highly versatile in perfumery and natural cosmetics.

It is traditionally cultivated in India and the Himalayan region (including Nepal), where it thrives in full sun. Artisanal harvesting and distillation have formed part of the local rural economy for generations.

Although it shares a species with palmarosa (Cymbopogon martini var. motia), Gingergrass is less floral and rose-like. It offers a greener, more rustic character, ideal for adding freshness and vibrancy where palmarosa provides a more rounded floral heart.

In perfumery, it works as a top/middle note, brightening compositions with herbaceous openings. It blends well with citrus oils (bergamot, lemon), florals (rose, geranium, neroli) and soft woods. It helps lighten dense accords and balance intense florals.

Cosmetic uses

Valued in herbal toners and purifying products for combination/oily skin, as well as revitalising body formulas and ambient fragrance. Used at low concentrations and with good formulation practice.

In Indian tradition, it has been used in baths and rubs for its refreshing, revitalising aroma, and to fragrance the home. In rural communities, it was added to carrier oils or bathwater to perfume the skin and clear the mind.

Precautions

Not for use by pregnant women or children. People with sensitive skin should take care as it may cause irritation; they should not use it in baths or massages.

Do not apply directly to the skin. Dilute in a carrier oil or follow the recommended usage rate for creams and other cosmetics. This rate should be 1% or 2% at most.
