Description
Geranium grows naturally in South Africa. Today, it is cultivated in many regions worldwide. It is found in Europe, where it arrived at the end of the XVII century, as well as in Egypt, Morocco, Madagascar, Réunion, Egypt, Guinea and Congo…Geranium has been associated with prosperity and credited with protective qualities; it was planted around homes to ward off evil spirits
Its precious essence was soon used in perfumery.
At the beginning of the XX century, opera singers used its essential oil to care for their voices and make them more powerful.
Geranium essential oil divides opinion: people either like it or strongly dislike it, with little middle ground. Dilution helps reveal its full aromatic subtlety. Its different notes then emerge, especially its delicate rose scent and light touch of citronella.
Essential oils are also obtained from other geraniums grown in particular regions. The Madagascar oil, for example, comes from the Bourbon variety, while rose geranium oil comes from South Africa. The differences between them are very subtle.
Rose geranium offers a fresher, more citrus-like aroma, while Bourbon is sweeter, greener and more floral. The latter usually contains more esters than the Egyptian variety.
