Wild and Organic French Lavender Essential Oil

French lavender, sometimes called tomillo borriquero or alucema in Spanish, is a shrubby plant that grows abundantly in the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands.
It belongs to the Lamiaceae family. There are several subspecies, including ssp pedunculata and ssp Luisieri (Seville lavender, from which a very valuable essential oil is extracted).
It is often found in areas where rock rose and white thyme grow. It is also abundant near the sea in the Mediterranean basin.
It is a nectar-producing plant highly valued by beekeepers.
The plant is known for its antiseptic, antibacterial and wound-healing properties. Its flowering tops are recommended in infusions for fever and respiratory conditions.
It should not be confused with Lavandula angustifolia: they are different plants, although both belong to the genus Lavandula. French lavender has deep purple flowers and petal-like lilac structures at the tip of the flower spike that resemble butterfly wings (in France, it is called butterfly lavender). These “petals” are absent from Lavandula angustifolia.

French lavender essential oil has a rather unappealing aroma, very different from that of Lavandula angustifolia. Its potential therapeutic uses are also very different because of the potential toxicity of French lavender essential oil, which contains a substantial proportion of ketones.
