Description
Native to Asia, benzoin is a large tree that grows wild in the mountains of Laos and is cultivated in the north of the country. Its gum-resin is collected in winter, and the “tears” are classified by size and colour into different quality grades.
It is also produced in India, Vietnam, Thailand, Java and Sumatra.
In Asia, benzoin has been used in religious practices since ancient times. It was also used in Egypt and Rome as a perfume alongside other aromatic substances.
The original, famous “Armenian Paper” is simply paper soaked in benzoin tincture. Auguste Ponsot began making it in France after discovering, during a trip to Armenia, that people there burned benzoin to disinfect their homes.
Dioscorides described benzoin in his dictionary.
Benzoin is said to promote prosperity and luck, particularly in trade, industry and crafts. It is believed to have the power to attract customers and money.
Its aroma is certainly very appealing, warm and comforting. It envelops us and immerses us in a feeling of well-being and security.
In perfumery, it is used to fix fragrances.
