Description
The camphor tree is an evergreen tree in the Lauraceae family that can reach thirty metres in height. Its essential oil is extracted from its leaves, trunk and roots.
This oil is potentially very toxic because of its high camphor content. The FDA does not approve it for medicinal use; it may only be used in skin products and at the permitted doses.
It is excellent for relieving congestion when we have a respiratory condition: simply putting a few drops on a handkerchief can bring results.
It helps control scalp oiliness when used in shampoos and other hair products. It improves skin conditions such as acne and inflammation and, lastly, supports the circulatory system when applied through massage.
Precautions
Not for use by pregnant women or children. People with conditions such as epilepsy or Parkinson’s disease should not use it either.
Do not apply directly to the skin. Dilute in a carrier oil or follow the recommended usage rate for creams and other cosmetics. This rate should be 1% or 2% at most.
Taxonomy
Botanical name: Cinnamomum camphora - Family: Lauraceae - Genus: Cinnamomum
A large evergreen tree with brittle branches, reaching 20 metres in height. Its leaves are alternate, stalked, oval, leathery and pointed, bright green in colour, with three main veins and small glands in their axils.
The yellowish-white flowers appear in May-June, grouped in corymbose panicles in the leaf axils. The fruit is a spherical, reddish berry that turns black when ripe.
