Description

White thyme is a plant endemic to the Iberian Peninsula. It grows naturally in rocky areas and siliceous soils. It is found at altitudes between 400 and 1400 metres.
Thymus mastichina belongs to the Lamiaceae family and is known as white thyme or wild marjoram (in some regions, the plant is often called “marjoram” and must not be confused with marjoram, oríganum majorana).

In some parts of Andalusia it is called almoraduz or almoradux, and in Portugal tomilho bela luz. It is endemic to the Iberian Peninsula, found wild in central and southern Spain and in Portugal. It takes the form of a small bush around 60 cm tall. It thrives in rocky areas and siliceous soils at altitudes between 400 and 1400 metres.
It is a nectar-producing plant that attracts bees with its aroma. It flowers from April to July.

White thyme is traditionally used in food (as a seasoning) and alcoholic drinks (mainly liqueurs).
Many traditional medicinal uses are also known:
For conditions affecting the digestive, genitourinary, respiratory and nervous systems, musculoskeletal pain, skin problems and infections. It was commonly taken as an infusion, and more recently its essential oil has been and continues to be used. Some sources mention its use as a scalp tonic.

The dried or burnt plant has been used in homes to protect against various insects and parasites.

The whole plant was distilled at home to extract its essence and used to make colognes (by macerating it in alcohol) and scented waters (hydrolates), which women used as perfume. The flowering stems were also used to scent clothes. It was also used as an air freshener.

Some experts call the essential oil "Spanish ravintsara". They share a composition that gives them similar properties.

Appearance: Clear liquid, colourless to light yellow.

Solubility: Soluble in alcohol and oils. Insoluble in water
