Description

Rue is an evergreen shrub in the Rutaceae family that reaches approximately one metre in height. Its lemon-yellow flowers form clusters, and its leaves have numerous glands that release a rather unpleasant smell. These plants have traditionally been used medicinally since Graeco-Roman times, although nowadays rue is mostly used in homeopathy because it is considered very toxic. It has a high vitamin C content and was grown in cloisters for its anti-aphrodisiac properties.

The essential oil is highly toxic and its use is reserved for people with specialist knowledge.

Solubility: Soluble in alcohol and oils

Precautions

Not for use by pregnant or breastfeeding women, or children under six years of age. Avoid sun exposure after application, as it is phototoxic.

Do not apply directly to the skin. Dilute in a carrier oil or follow the recommended usage rate for creams and other cosmetics. This rate should be 1% or 2% at most.
