Description

So-called Spanish oregano is actually a member of the large thyme family. It grows naturally in the Mediterranean region, mainly in Spain and Portugal. It is hardly surprising that its aroma is “confused” with oregano. However, the plants look very different. Also known as Andalusian thyme or carrasqueño thyme, it grows in very sunny, arid places where temperatures can become extremely high. It can be found among rocks on limestone cliffs or in garrigue scrubland.

This essential oil is biochemically very similar to other oregano oils and is used interchangeably for the same therapeutic purposes. Spanish oregano is rich in phenols (carvacrol and thymol), molecules that are among the most active against bacteria, fungi and parasites.

Appearance: Clear liquid, yellow to dark brown

Solubility: Soluble in alcohol and oil, insoluble in water.

Precautions

Do not use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Do not use on children under 6 years of age. Do not use undiluted on the skin or mucous membranes; it is dermocaustic.
