Description

Niaouli is a close relative of tea tree and cajeput. It is a shrub native to New Caledonia, but it also occurs naturally in New Guinea and Australia. It has been known for its medicinal properties for many years. As early as the Second World War, soldiers in New Caledonia used the essential oil to repel mosquitoes. Local people used it to heal skin wounds, prevent infection and speed up healing.
Initially, a rectified essential oil called Gomenol was produced. It became very popular in France, where it was included in many pharmaceutical products.

There are several chemotypes; the most common is 1.8-cineol. Two other chemotypes can be found: nerolidol and viridiflorol.

The aroma of this essential oil is not particularly pleasant. It can vary greatly from batch to batch, but a sulphurous smell reminiscent of rotten eggs often predominates, so it is not always very appealing from an olfactory point of view.

Appearance: Clear liquid, ranging from colourless to pale yellow

Solubility: Soluble in alcohol and oil. Insoluble in water

Precautions

Do not use during the first three months of pregnancy. Use with caution in cases of hormone-dependent cancer (breast, ovarian or uterine cancer). Do not use in children under 6 years of age except under professional supervision.
