Description

Peppermint is a hybrid plant, the result of crossing water mint with spearmint (Mentha spicata). Peppermint was apparently first observed in a cultivated spearmint field in England at the end of the XVII century. Its cultivation began in England, the Netherlands and Germany in the middle of the XVIII century.
It is a sterile plant that cannot reproduce from seed, but its characteristic complex root system allows it to spread easily, becoming clearly invasive.
Mint has been cultivated and used for more than 4000 years, although it is not entirely certain which mint is depicted in illustrations found in Egyptian hieroglyphs (specifically in Edfu). It was established that the Egyptians used some type of mint to prepare sacred perfumes.
This Peppermint variety is cultivated with great care and attention in France, and one of the most notable differences is the use of the Flowering Tops rather than the whole plant.
In aromatherapy, peppermint essential oil is used to relieve various types of pain and digestive disorders.
