Description
Tea tree is a shrub native to Australia, where it has been used for its medicinal properties since ancient times. It owes its name to the explorer James Cook and his crew. During one of their voyages, they tasted a refreshing tea made from the shrub’s leaves and named it “Tea tree”.
They also observed that Indigenous people applied crushed leaves to wounds to prevent infection.
A chemist named Arthur de Raman Penfold first extracted its essential oil in 1922. The plant’s valuable anti-infective properties could then be demonstrated.
During the Second World War, Australian soldiers were issued a bottle of tea tree essential oil with their first-aid kits.
Alongside lavender, this is probably one of the most studied, used and sold essential oils in the world.
Its distinctive medicinal aroma may not appeal to everyone, but it is undoubtedly an essential part of the family aromatherapy kit.
