Taxonomy
Botanical name: Prunus armeniaca - Family: Rosaceae - Genus: Prunus
It is a deciduous tree growing 3 to 6 metres tall, unarmed or somewhat thorny. Its stalked, stipulate leaves measure 5 to 10 cm by 3.5 to 8 cm and are ovate, suborbicular or heart-shaped, with an acuminate tip and a doubly serrated margin. Both surfaces become nearly hairless; young leaves are reddish, with a few glands at the base of the blade.
The flowers are solitary or in clusters of 2-6, nearly sessile, with a cup-shaped or tubular receptacle measuring 5 to 7 mm, orange inside and purple or yellowish outside. The sepals measure 5 to 7 mm and are reflexed, obovate to oblong, with a finely toothed, slightly ciliate margin, a blunt tip and a purple colour. The petals measure 10 to 15 mm and are obovate, white or pale pink
