Description
St John's wort is a very common plant that grows along roadsides and in sunny fields. It is native to Europe, North Africa and Central Asia, but is found in many regions of the world.
St John's wort has been used for therapeutic purposes for more than 2000 years.
St John's wort flowers in mid-spring, although in some regions flowering coincides with the summer solstice, which is why it is called St John's wort. It is a sunny, luminous plant. Its golden-yellow colour catches the eye when it flowers along roads and paths.
Many legends are told about this plant, and magical properties are attributed to it. For example, the numerous holes visible in the leaves when held against the light are said to be drops of blood from St John the Baptist when he was beheaded. One of the plant's most popular uses was to protect against evil spirits and ward off the devil.
In the Middle Ages, it was already known and used to treat states of distress that were then regarded as possession by evil spirits.
St John's wort infused oil and tincture are better known than its essential oil. Because the plant has a low yield, the essential oil is rather expensive. In herbal medicine, St John's wort tincture or the dried plant are highly valued for their antidepressant properties.
St John's wort essential oil has an interesting but subtle aroma, like that of the plant itself.
Important: St John's wort essential oil does not contain hypericin, the active constituent associated with antidepressant properties and responsible for the beautiful red colour of the infused oil.
Appearance: Clear liquid, pale yellow to golden yellow
Solubility: Soluble in alcohol and oils
