Kem BS is a preservative system with a broad range of effectiveness, based on food-grade preservatives and particularly suitable for formulating cosmetics for delicate and sensitive skin.

Suitable for use in a variety of cosmetics with an acidic pH of up to 5,5, it is approved worldwide without restrictions for rinse-off and leave-on products.

All its ingredients are nature-identical, food-grade and approved for use in natural and organic cosmetics under most standard certifications (COSMOS Ecocert, Soil Associaton, BDIH, ICEA, NaTrue).

Antimicrobial activity

Kem BS is a balanced combination of the antibacterial and antifungal properties of sodium benzoate and the antifungal action of potassium sorbate, forming an effective broad-spectrum system against bacteria, with particular activity against yeasts and moulds.

Because it is based on organic acid salts, which are active in their undissociated forms, Kem BS exhibits its greatest activity in formulations with pH levels below 5,5.

Properties and stability

Kem BS is very soluble in water, glycerine and glycols, and slightly soluble in alcohols. It remains stable against discolouration and at low storage temperatures. It can tolerate manufacturing temperatures of up to 80°C.

Its activity depends on the formulation's pH, with maximum activity in the pH range of 2 to 5,5.

Haircare: gels, shampoos, lotions, conditioners, mousses.
Face and body care: serums, toners, gels, lotions, creams, wet wipes.
Make-up: foundations, wet wipes, powders.
Shaving products: soaps, gels, balms, lotions, creams.
Sun care: sunscreens, tanning products, after-sun care.
Bath products: gels, foams, soaps, intimate hygiene, oils, talcs, wet wipes.
Baby products: shampoos, bath products, lotions, creams, oils, talcs, wet wipes.
Raw materials: surfactants, plant extracts.

Use level

Kem BS can be used at concentrations of 0,2 to 1,0 % without adding other preservatives in the simplest cosmetics, but it must be combined with other preservatives in formulations with a greater risk of bacterial contamination.

Regulatory approvals

Sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate have been tested and widely used in cosmetic and pharmaceutical products and are the most widely used food preservatives. Their broad regulatory acceptance allows formulators to create cosmetics for the natural market and for worldwide distribution.
