Description

Like other citrus trees, the orange tree reached Europe from Asia. It was introduced to Spain by the Arabs in the XI century, where it was planted for ornamental purposes as well as for its exquisite, fragrant blossom.
The flowers of citrus trees are known as azahar, a word of Arabic origin meaning white flower.

The therapeutic properties of these trees have long been known. They form part of the natural pharmacopoeia of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda.
For the Chinese, the fruit attracted good luck and symbolised prosperity and fertility.
Oranges were once very valuable, even luxurious gifts. Not so long ago in our country, giving an orange as an Epiphany gift was a real luxury.

The tree that produces this variety of orange is apparently the result of a natural mutation.

Blood orange essential oil is particularly suited to calming and relaxation, even for young children. It is also used to flavour desserts and drinks.

Appearance: Clear liquid, yellow-orange to very dark orange.

Solubility: Soluble in alcohol and oil, insoluble in water

Precautions

Contrary to what many sources state, sweet or blood orange essential oil is not phototoxic. (ref. Robert Tisserand – Essential Oil Safety) It may be used during pregnancy and on children, always observing the appropriate usage rates. Do not use undiluted on the skin. Keep refrigerated to prevent oxidation.
