Description

Like other citrus trees, bitter orange reached Europe from Asia. It was introduced to Spain by the Arabs in the eleventh century, where it was planted both for ornamental purposes and for its exquisite, fragrant blossoms.
Citrus blossoms are known in Spanish as azahar, a word of Arabic origin meaning white flower.

The therapeutic properties of these trees have long been known. They form part of the natural pharmacopoeia of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda.
For the Chinese, the fruit attracted good luck and symbolised prosperity and fertility.

Bitter orange gives us three aromatic oils: “petit grain” is extracted from the leaves; the flowers yield the wonderful orange blossom essential oil known as neroli; and essence is also extracted from the bitter orange fruits.

Appearance: Clear liquid, dark yellow to greenish yellow

Solubility: Insoluble in water, soluble in alcohol and oil
