Juniper, particularly its berries, has accompanied humans since prehistoric times.
This small, slow-growing tree thrives mainly in dry, arid areas of the northern hemisphere.
We do not know what it was used for in prehistoric times, but we do know that many peoples and civilisations have used this shrub and its berries for medicinal or magical purposes.
It is mentioned in the Eber papyrus, one of the oldest Egyptian writings. Juniper was one of the ingredients of the famous kyfi, an aromatic substance burned by priests during rituals or for medicinal purposes.
In ancient Greece, its smoke was used during epidemics, and the Romans used it as a substitute for frankincense.
In many countries, juniper branches were burned or hung in rooms to ward off evil spirits.
Its aroma is rather gentle, notably fresh and evocative of cleanliness. It provides a pleasant sensation and clears our minds.
