Description

Diatomaceous Earth, also known as diatomite or kieselguhr, is a sedimentary rock composed mainly of the remains of diatoms, which are single-celled microalgae with silica skeletons.

Benefits of using Diatomaceous Earth in natural cosmetics

  • Natural exfoliant:
The small particles of Diatomaceous Earth provide gentle physical exfoliation, helping remove dead skin cells and leaving the skin softer and fresher.
  • Sebum and oil absorption:
Thanks to its porous nature, it can act as an absorbent agent, helping remove excess oil and sebum from the skin.
  • Pore refiner:
Helps cleanse pores and minimise their appearance.
  • Mattifying action:
Can help reduce skin shine by providing a matte finish.
  • Thickening and texturising agent:
In cosmetic formulations, it can act as an agent that gives products body and texture.
  • Safety and sustainability:
As a natural ingredient, Diatomaceous Earth may be preferred in natural cosmetic formulations because of environmental and safety concerns associated with certain synthetic ingredients.
  • Carrier for other active ingredients:
Its porous structure allows it to act as a vehicle for other active ingredients, potentially improving their delivery and effectiveness.

Differences between types of Diatomaceous Earth

Uncalcined diatomaceous earth is composed mainly of fossilised remains of diatoms, algae with silica skeletons.
Its main component is amorphous silica, a non-crystalline form of silicon dioxide.
This form differs from the crystalline silica found in calcined diatomaceous earth. In addition to amorphous silica, uncalcined diatomaceous earth contains smaller amounts of other minerals, such as aluminium, iron and magnesium.

Although both calcined and uncalcined forms contain silicon dioxide, it is crucial to distinguish between amorphous silica (cosmetic and food grade) and crystalline silica because of their different structures and properties.

For cosmetic use only; not suitable for food use.
