Description

Like other citrus trees, the orange tree came to Europe from Asia. It was introduced to Spain by the Arabs in the XI century and planted both for ornamental purposes and for its exquisite, fragrant blossom.
Citrus blossom is known in Spanish as azahar, a word of Arabic origin meaning white flower.

The therapeutic properties of these trees have long been known. They form part of the natural pharmacopoeia of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda.
For the Chinese, the fruit attracted good luck and symbolised prosperity and fertility.
Oranges were once highly valued, even luxurious gifts. Not so long ago in Spain, giving an orange as a Three Kings’ Day gift was a real luxury.

Sweet orange essential oil is particularly suitable for soothing and relaxing even young children. It is also used to flavour desserts and drinks.

Precautions

Do not use undiluted on the skin. Keep refrigerated to prevent oxidation. Contrary to what many sources state, sweet orange essential oil is not phototoxic (ref. Robert Tisserand – Essential Oil Safety).
