Description
Sodium gluconate is a colourless to white powder that is very soluble in water. It is the sodium salt of gluconic acid.
It is an effective natural chelating agent that prevents metals from precipitating in aqueous solutions, thereby preventing oxidative reactions.
Sequestering agents are chemical compounds that can bind to metal ions to form stable complexes; they are also called chelating agents. Some sources state that the name comes from the Greek term chele or khele, meaning claw or pincer.
Chelation occurs when the sequestering agent binds to the metal, forming a coordination compound or chelate, preventing metals from precipitating in aqueous solutions and also preventing oxidative reactions.
Chelating agents capture metal ions, forming complexes that remain soluble and harmless. This is particularly important in some industrial processes, preventing unwanted effects during production or in the finished product.
Sodium gluconate is a good substitute for EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) and its derivatives.
Chelating agents are currently used in several industries: medicine, analytical chemistry, food and environmental engineering. Further applications for sequestering agents are thought to remain to be discovered or improved. Examples include:
- Water treatment: As softeners, sequestering agents capture metal ions such as Ca+
- Soap and detergent industry: Sequestering agents help form water-soluble complexes and improve their properties.
- Cosmetics manufacture: Sequestering agents prevent rancidity, preserve components and help stabilise colour.
- Medicine: In cases of thalassaemia with iron accumulation in the blood, or poisoning due to excessive exposure to heavy metals that the human body cannot eliminate, chelation treatment is used; the metals form complexes that can be eliminated through the urinary system.
Directions for use
Use in soap: dissolve between 0,3% and 0,5% sodium gluconate in the water in which the sodium/potassium hydroxide will be dissolved.
