Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is a bright white substance used primarily as a colourant in a wide range of products. It also has a number of lesser-known qualities that make it an extremely useful and important ingredient in efforts to combat climate change and prevent skin cancer.
Valued for its ultra-white colour, its ability to scatter light and its resistance to UV rays, TiO2 is a popular ingredient found in hundreds of products we see and use every day.
Titanium dioxide is a white inorganic compound that has been used for approximately 100 years in a wide variety of products. Its non-toxic, non-reactive and luminous properties safely enhance the whiteness and brightness of many materials.
It is the whitest and brightest known pigment, with reflective qualities, and it can also scatter and absorb UV rays.
Its ultra-white colour, highly refractive properties and resistance to UV rays make TiO2 extremely popular in both industrial and consumer sectors, appearing in dozens of products people use and see daily.
Beyond paints, catalytic coatings, plastics, paper, pharmaceuticals and sunscreens, some lesser-known applications include packaging, commercial printing inks, cosmetics, toothpastes and food (where it is listed as food colourant E171).
In skin care and make-up products, titanium dioxide is used as a pigment and a thickener for creams. As a sunscreen, ultrafine TiO2 is used because of its transparency and ability to absorb UV rays.
