One of the most interesting and notable properties of propylene glycol is its excellent ability to moisturise and lubricate at the same time. This is why it is highly valued in the cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries, although it is also widely used in industrial applications.
General uses of Propylene Glycol. What it is used for.
- As a humectant: Propylene glycol is a natural carrier of moisture that can also be ingested in controlled quantities. For this reason, it is commonly used in the food industry for manufacturing, preserving and storing food, as it helps keep it hydrated, either as part of its contents or as a protective layer.
Propylene glycol is also used in carbonated or fizzy drinks as an anticoagulant or flavour enhancer. - In cosmetics: Propylene glycol is used as a base for cosmetic creams intended to moisturise dry skin, preventing dryness associated with excessive make-up use and continued sun exposure, as it has an excellent ability to retain water in the dermis and epidermis. It is widely used as an active component of shaving foams, deodorants, masks and body lotions intended to lubricate extremely dry skin. In hair care, it is used to make hair mousses, conditioners and moisturising masks.
- Pharmaceutical industry:
Being quite rich and moisturising, it is used to improve the consistency of ointments, generally burn ointments, healing creams or intimate lubricants. - Electronic cigarettes or vaping devices:
Propylene glycol is the main base of the flavoured liquid used in electronic cigarettes (vaping devices). Using USP-grade propylene glycol, USP-grade glycerine (available in our shop) and a propylene-glycol-based flavouring (also available in our online shop), flavourings suitable for vaping can be made.
