Description

Lavandin is a hybrid plant that appears where lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) and spike lavender (Lavandula spica) hybridise naturally. Lavandin is propagated by cuttings because it is sterile.

It is understandably easy to confuse lavandin with lavender or spike lavender. However, careful observation reveals distinguishing features that help us identify them.

To begin with, lavender is a high-altitude plant, so if you find a plant that you think could be lavender but you are near the sea, it is not Lavandula angustifolia. It is most likely lavandin, especially if it is an ornamental plant. Lavandin is a large plant: the stem bearing the flower spikes branches at a point into three stems. Spike lavender also often shows this characteristic. Lavender, by contrast, has only one flower spike per stem. In lavandin, the flower spike is longer and the colour of the flowers more intense and uniform, although this depends considerably on where it is cultivated.
The aroma of super lavandin is closer to lavender than to spike lavender, although it is more “rustic”, less fine and gentle.

Three main varieties of lavandin are cultivated: Grosso, Abrial and super.
Super lavandin essential oil is preferred for therapeutic purposes. The Abrial variety also has therapeutic interest, with uses similar to those of spike lavender essential oil.

Lavandin essential oil is often used as a more economical alternative to lavender essential oil. It is suitable for naturally scenting clothes in wardrobes, adding to the laundry and scenting soaps.

The most notable properties of super lavandin essential oil are its anxiolytic, sedative, soothing and pain-relieving properties.

USES

Olfactory use

Super lavandin essential oil can be diffused, particularly in the late afternoon and evening, to help you relax and fall asleep:

Blend for a relaxed atmosphere that promotes sleep

40 drops of bitter orange petitgrain essential oil
Adjust the number of drops to suit the type of diffuser you use.

Blend for an atmosphere free from pathogens

20 drops of super lavandin essential oil
20 drops of rosemary ct camphor essential oil
20 drops of Scots pine essential oil

Adjust the number of drops to suit the type of diffuser you use.

Topical use

(Properly diluted with vegetable oil).
Super lavandin essential oil relieves muscle pain.

15 drops of super lavandin essential oil
15 drops of rosemary camphor essential oil
30 drops of exotic basil ct methylchavicol essential oil
13 ml of St John's wort or arnica oil macerate

Apply around 5-6 drops of the blend to the affected area every half hour, 4 times in succession, then as needed.

Lavender essential oil is very useful for preventing head lice infestations:

Apply 2 drops of super lavandin essential oil diluted with 2 drops of vegetable oil behind the ears and at the nape of the neck.

Another option is to rub your hands with 2 drops of super lavandin essential oil and run them through the hair.

Applications in olfactology (psycho-emotional wellbeing)

Lavandin essential oil is not usually used in olfactology.

Translated review. It arrived in perfect condition. A slightly "sharper" (camphoraceous) scent than lavender, but very pleasant. I use it a lot for massages.

Un imprescindible de mi botiquín.

Llegó en perfectas condiciones. Olor algo más "duro" (alcanforado) que la lavanda, pero muy agradable. Lo uso mucho para masajes.
