Description
A popular antioxidant and a component in collagen production, which provides flexibility and elasticity.
It helps reduce the appearance of age spots and provides protection against external environmental factors. Vitamin C is an organic acid derived from sugar with antioxidant properties.
The human body does not synthesise it, so it must be obtained through food. It is found mainly in fruit and vegetables (citrus fruit, blackcurrants, tomatoes, potatoes, peppers and green leafy vegetables).
It is a white crystalline powder that changes colour when exposed to air and moisture. It is odourless, solid, water-soluble and slightly soluble in 96% ethanol.
As it is water-soluble, it does not protect fats from oxidation.
It can protect DNA from oxidation caused by free radicals.
Properties and uses of Ascorbic Acid - Vitamin C
Essential for collagen synthesis, it regenerates and heals tissue and, combined with Vitamin E, combats skin pigmentation. It has depigmenting, antioxidant and skin anti-ageing properties, adding radiance, elasticity and an even skin tone.
It is used topically in creams, powders, serums, masks and more.
Side effects
Usually well tolerated.
Recommended amount
- Topical use up to 5%.
- As an antioxidant in cosmetics, 0,1 to 1%.
Precautions
In case of contact with the eyes, rinse thoroughly with water.
Exposure to oxygen, metals, light and heat destroys it, so it must be stored in a dark, cold place in non-metallic containers.
