Description
Patchouli is native to South-East Asia. It belongs to the same family as lavender, rosemary and mint. Accounts of its arrival in Europe vary: some sources date it to the Crusades, while others say it arrived through England during the colonisation of India. Its leaves were used to protect cashmere garments from moths on the journey to England. This introduced the English to its scent, and they began using the leaves to fragrance wardrobes and potpourri. In France, for example, it is said that Napoleon Bonaparte brought patchouli from Egypt.
In India, patchouli was reserved for the Brahmin caste, who used it in religious rituals.
A symbol of love, prosperity and fertility, its aroma won over perfumers, and its essential oil is a staple in oriental perfumes.
In France, it gained a poor reputation at the end of the 19th century, as it was the favourite perfume of Parisian prostitutes.
In the XX century, it became a symbol of the hippie movement in the 60s, associated with sexual freedom and gaining a reputation as an aphrodisiac scent.
Patchouli essential oil has a unique, distinctive composition. It contains sesquiterpenes not found in any other natural substance.
Its aroma is intoxicating, enveloping, deep and intense, with prominent woody and leathery notes. It is relaxing, soothing and comforting.
