Description
Myrrh is the resin exuded by a tree that grows in desert areas of Africa, particularly Somalia and Ethiopia, and in the Arabian Peninsula. This precious resin has been used since Antiquity. The Egyptians, who believed that myrrh came from the tears of the god Horus, used it to embalm the dead, and it was one of the ingredients of the famous sacred perfume called Kifi.
The Greeks also made extensive use of myrrh, even to flavour wine.
Along with frankincense, it was given to the infant Jesus by the Magi.
Today, myrrh and frankincense remain resins used in many religious rituals around the world.
It forms part of the Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia, where it is used to rejuvenate the body and mind, stimulate tissue regeneration and treat oral infections.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, it is prescribed to treat physical trauma, haemorrhoids and wounds.
Myrrh essential oil has a deep, sweet, warm aroma. It is particularly comforting and calming.
