Description

Mastic was known throughout the Mediterranean basin in Antiquity, particularly for the resin that naturally exudes from the tree. It was part of the famous Egyptian Kyphi.

It was widely used in Arab medicine. At that time, around the year 1000, it was used in many ways for both internal and external ailments: tonsillitis, lung diseases, palpitations, hepatic colic, stomach disorders, wounds... It was also chewed to maintain good oral hygiene, care for inflamed gums and combat stomach acidity.

Mastic symbolised purity and virginity and was one of the attributes of the Greek goddess Artemis
Wild mastic grows to a height of 1 to 3 m. It grows in dry, stony soils in the Balearic Islands and parts of the Mediterranean coast, southern France, Corsica, Morocco, Greece, Turkey…

The aroma of mastic essential oil is very distinctive and difficult to describe. It cannot be described as pleasant; it is somewhat intense and disconcerting.

The essential oil is obtained from the leaves. The yield is very low, which explains its high price.
