Spike lavender grows naturally in the Mediterranean and southern Europe. It thrives at altitudes between 300 and 800 metres. It is often confused with lavender, as it was in the past until it was botanically distinguished from lavender (Lavandula angustifolia). Many references in ancient texts are confusing, and it is difficult to know when they referred to one plant or the other.
The two plants are still often confused today. To complicate matters further, the natural crossing of these lavenders produces a sterile hybrid called Lavandula x hibrida (lavandin). From these three plants, we extract essential oils with biochemical differences that must not be ignored.

Spike lavender essential oil offers very interesting and specific properties. It is particularly known for relieving all kinds of insect bites and stings, especially those that release some form of venom (bees, wasps, spiders, jellyfish…). It is also known for soothing burns, particularly sunburn.
It is a good analgesic and can be used to relieve different types of pain.

Its aroma is intense at first, and as it loses intensity, it gains warmth. It opens the airways, clears the head, awakens and invigorates.

USES

Olfactory use

The aroma of spike lavender is very rustic and unmistakably evokes the Mediterranean. It can be combined with other essential oils to create a characterful blend to enjoy throughout the year.

Mediterranean blend
30 drops of spike lavender essential oil
15 drops of cypress essential oil
15 drops of rosemary verbenone essential oil
15 drops of juniper essential oil
15 drops of bay essential oil

Adjust the number of drops to suit your diffuser model.


Topical use

(Properly diluted with vegetable oil).
Spike lavender essential oil is a must-have in a hiker's backpack and a beach bag. You will appreciate having it with you in the event of a bite, sting, sunburn or even a wound or sprain.

Venomous insect bites and stings, and jellyfish stings
Apply 2 to 3 drops to the affected area. Repeat every 20 minutes, around 4 times in succession.

A roll-on can be prepared for children aged 2 years and over:

10 ml roll-on
30 drops of spike lavender essential oil
Top up with calendula vegetable oil.

Apply to the affected area every half hour, 4 times in succession, then as needed.

Sunburn
Apply 2 drops of the essential oil diluted with St John's wort oil. Repeat the application 3 to 4 times.


Spike lavender essential oil is known for its extraordinary healing properties. Combine it with other complementary essential oils for optimum results.

Blend to promote healing

12 drops of spike lavender essential oil
12 drops of rockrose essential oil
10 drops of myrrh essential oil
10 drops of copaiba essential oil
13,5 ml of St John's wort oil

Apply around 4 or 5 drops to the affected area.

This essential oil is particularly effective for eliminating skin fungi.
For fungal infections of the toes,
Dilute 2 drops of spike lavender essential oil with a small amount of coconut oil (6 drops if liquid, or a small knife-tip amount if solid).
Apply to the affected area 2 to 3 times a day until resolved.


Spike lavender essential oil is a useful analgesic. It helps relieve muscle tension and joint pain.

Multipurpose pain-relieving blend (osteoarthritis, neck pain, headaches, muscle tension…)

15 drops of spike lavender essential oil
15 drops of katrafay essential oil
15 drops of exotic basil ct methyl-chavicol essential oil
15 drops of blue eucalyptus essential oil
15 drops of rosemary camphor essential oil
12,5 ml of arnica oil

Apply around 4 or 5 drops to the painful area 3 to 4 times a day, or as needed.


Applications in olfactology (psycho-emotional wellbeing)

Its warm, balsamic aroma is useful for comforting people going through uncertain times who struggle with insecurity. It brings confidence, strength and courage.
In this case, spike lavender essential oil can be used with Himalayan cedar and bay.
Prepare a roll-on:
15 drops of spike lavender essential oil
15 drops of Himalayan cedar essential oil
5 drops of bay essential oil
Top up with jojoba oil
Apply as a perfume to the wrists, neck and behind the ears.

Appearance: Clear liquid, ranging from colourless to pale yellow

Avoid use during pregnancy or in children under 6 years of age except under professional supervision.
