Description
Canadian thuja, commonly known as eastern white cedar or northern white cedar, is a species of evergreen conifer belonging to the Cupressaceae family. It is native to eastern North America, more specifically Canada and the north-eastern United States.It is a tree well known for its ornamental value and use in carpentry.
Some Indigenous peoples of North America have used parts of the tree for medicinal purposes. For example, the leaves were used to make teas to treat respiratory and skin diseases.
The essential oil is extracted from the leaves and is rich in toxic ketones such as thujone and fenchone.
Its use is strictly reserved for professionals.
