Description
The leaves of this plant are large, reaching up to 3 m in length, and its fruit, the coconut, is the largest seed in existence. The coconut palm is a single species with many varieties, distinguished mainly by the colour of the fruit (yellow or green). The plants differ only in their stems. The shared, characteristic feature of all varieties is the pleasant, sweet, fleshy, juicy flavour of the fruit. Its economic importance has led to cultivation on tropical beaches, its ideal habitat.
The coconut palm has polygamomonoecious flowers, with male and female flowers on the same inflorescence. Flowering is continuous, and the female flowers produce the seeds.
