Description
Geranium macrorrhizum, commonly known as Balkan geranium or Zdravets, is a perennial plant native to the mountainous regions of Europe, particularly the Balkans and parts of Central Europe. It forms dense, ground-covering clumps. Its leaves are dark green and rounded, with toothed edges. Its pink to purple flowers have five petals and appear in compact clusters in spring and early summer.
For centuries, Zdravets has been part of Bulgarian folk tradition as a symbol of health and longevity, prosperity and youth.
It is no coincidence that the ancient Bulgarians gave this plant the wonderful name zdravets, meaning “bearer of health”.
Zdravets oil has valuable cosmetic uses, as it is known to have a whitening effect and can help remove pigmented spots and blemishes from the face and skin. It is also effective at softening wrinkles.
In perfumery, zdravets oil adds exotic nuances and is an excellent fixative.
The yield of Zdravets is low (around 0,15% essential oil), which explains its high price. Another factor is that it is a wild plant harvested by hand in areas that are difficult to access.
The main component of the essential oil is the sesquiterpene ketone Germacrone (around 60-85%).
At room temperature, the essential oil tends to crystallise, leaving one liquid part and another more crystalline part. Simply stir to combine the two parts.
Appearance: Clear liquid, light to dark green
Solubility: Soluble in alcohol and oil
Precautions
Not for use by pregnant women or children.
Do not apply directly to the skin. Dilute in a carrier oil or follow the recommended usage rate for creams and other cosmetics. This rate should be 1% or 2% at most.
