Description
Differences in the molecular weight of hyaluronic acid (HA) significantly affect its physical and biological properties, including water retention, viscosity and behaviour in solutions or gels, as summarised below.
- Water Retention:
Ultra-high molecular weight hyaluronic acid (over 2,3 million daltons) can retain more water than high molecular weight hyaluronic acid (0,8 to 1,2 million daltons). This is due to its greater ability to form hydrated networks in solution, making it extremely effective at retaining water. This property is valuable in applications where maximum hydration is desired, such as skin care products. - Viscosity:
As molecular weight increases, so does the viscosity of hyaluronic acid solutions. Ultra-high molecular weight HA forms much more viscous solutions or gels than high molecular weight HA at the same concentration. This affects handling and application in areas ranging from cosmetics to specialised osteoarthritis treatments. - Gelling and Required Concentration:
Its greater viscosity and water-retaining ability may mean less ultra-high molecular weight HA is needed to achieve the same gel consistency as high molecular weight HA. However, more water may be needed for complete hydration and gelling, particularly because larger molecules can take longer to absorb water and become evenly distributed. - Biocompatibility and Degradation:
Ultra-high molecular weight hyaluronic acid products may be more resistant to enzymatic degradation in the body because of their larger size. This may result in longer residence time in tissues, which is desirable in certain cosmetic applications. - Effects on Cells and Tissues:
HA's interaction with cells and tissues may vary with molecular weight. High and ultra-high molecular weight HA may influence cell proliferation, inflammation and healing processes differently, which is relevant to regenerative medicine and biomedical applications.
In summary, ultra-high molecular weight hyaluronic acid offers advantages in water retention, the formation of more viscous and longer-lasting gels, and potentially greater biocompatibility and effectiveness in certain applications. However, handling and formulation may require special consideration, such as adjustments to concentration and hydration processes to optimise its properties.
Detailed Overview
Hyaluronic acid, a natural polymer essential for skin hydration and elasticity, plays a crucial role in the health of connective tissues such as joints and cartilage. Our hyaluronic acid stands out for its entirely plant-based origin, derived from advanced fermentation processes applied to wheat peptone, ensuring a product free from genetic modification (Non-GMO) and entirely suitable for vegans.
Our hyaluronic acid is a high molecular weight mucopolysaccharide formed from chains of glucuronic acid and N-acetylglucosamine disaccharides, carefully assembled to maximise water retention and viscosity. It is a fine white to almost white powder with exceptional hygroscopic ability. Although it dissolves readily in water, it is notably insoluble in organic solvents such as acetone and anhydrous ethanol.
By comparison, our new ultra-high molecular weight hyaluronic acid range takes these properties further, offering even more effective solutions for applications requiring superior hydration and prolonged durability. It is ideal for advanced skin care formulations and specialised medical applications.
Properties and Uses of High Molecular Weight Hyaluronic Acid
Hyaluronic acid can retain water equivalent to thousands of times its weight. It is therefore used to hydrate the epidermis, as it rebuilds the fibres that support skin tissues.
As an excellent moisturiser and lubricant, it noticeably improves the skin's characteristics, providing softness, tone and elasticity.
High molecular weight hyaluronic acid penetrates less deeply into the skin, but its ability to moisturise and smooth wrinkles is wonderful.
It also promotes collagen production, multiplying the rejuvenating effect.
Its regenerating and wound-healing effects also make it useful for reducing scars caused by severe acne and other skin conditions.
It can also reduce redness, pain and inflammation.
It can be added to almost any cosmetic product: creams, lotions, essences, foams, shampoos, masks, serums...
Dilute the powder first in alcohol or water, then add it to the aqueous phase. Do not heat above 70°C.
Recommended Dosage
0,05% - 5% for topical use.
Side Effects
At the recommended doses, it is neither a skin irritant nor a skin sensitiser.
