Description

Vitex agnus-castus (VAC), or chaste tree, is a species native to the Mediterranean, belonging to the Lamiaceae family, that grows in cool groves and along riverbanks.

The fruits are harvested when fully ripe. Leaves, flowers and/or berries are consumed as a decoction, traditional tincture, apple cider vinegar tincture, syrup or elixir, or simply eaten.

The fruits are recommended for treating imbalances in the female and male reproductive systems. The species is called chaste tree because monks originally used it as a libido-reducing medicine to help them maintain celibacy.

This plant has long been indicated for premenstrual syndrome disorders.

Clinical evidence

Clinical studies show a beneficial effect in treating premenstrual syndrome. The use of plant extracts is recommended in Germany.

Its mechanism of action is not well understood. A slight reduction in prolactin levels has been found.
A decrease in prolactin will affect levels of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and oestrogen in women, and testosterone in men.
