• PLANT:

The liquorice shrub, Glycyrrhiza glabra, whose name means sweet root in Greek, belongs to the legume family (Fabaceae) and is native to the Mediterranean and Asia Minor. It is therefore a very easy plant to grow and adapts perfectly to our climate.
It is also known as paloduz, palulú or sweet stick. It is a deciduous herbaceous plant with stoloniferous roots that usually reaches a metre in height under optimal growing conditions.
The edible root of this plant is one of the oldest known flavourings. Its bittersweet, aniseed-like taste has been used for many years to make confectionery.

• COMPOSITION:

Liquorice contains, among other components, sugars (glycyrrhizin, glucose and sucrose), flavonoids (icoflavonol, licoricone, glycirol, glyzarine, gormononetin, Iioliquiritigenin, glabrol, glabrone), saponins, tannins, beta-carotene, amino acids (asparagine), proteins, acids (salicylic, malic, betulinic, glycyrrhetinic), minerals (calcium, chromium, cobalt, phosphorus, magnesium, potassium, silicon and sodium) and vitamins (vitamin C and thiamine).

• COSMETIC PROPERTIES AND USES:

Liquorice is widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for its anti-inflammatory properties. Its effect is so strong that it has been called natural cortisone. Thanks to these anti-inflammatory properties, it is used to treat dermatological conditions and to help in the treatment of eczema, dermatitis, seborrhoea, psoriasis, herpes, burns, hair loss, fungal infections and acne, by applying it directly to the skin and hair.
It is also very useful in helping people stop smoking. Chewing the root directly several times a day is recommended. This replaces the habit of bringing a cigarette to the mouth and helps to detoxify the body.
Another benefit is relief from pain or skin problems (inflammation, itching, etc.); for this, add it to bathwater and bathe for 20 or 30 minutes.

Its use is not recommended during pregnancy, as it may cause hormonal changes and even premature labour.
