Description
You are looking at one of the most valued species on the planet, with a tradition spanning millennia. It is truly special and extremely difficult to obtain given its current status. We bring it to you directly from the producer, through the Circular Economy, and only from trees that have died naturally, making it even more valuable. The Heartwood is distilled, giving it that unmistakable aroma and incomparable biochemical composition.
Often confused with Amyris Sandalwood, this unique tree has been an integral part of the culture and traditions of India and other regions of South Asia for millennia, right up to the present day. Its aromatic wood is among the oldest and most valuable in the world, used in various spiritual, religious and medicinal practices.
A little History
- Religious and Spiritual Practices:
In Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism, sandalwood has been used to make sacred objects and statues and to build temples. Sandalwood incense is burnt during religious rituals and ceremonies, as it is believed to purify the surroundings, attract positive energies and facilitate deep meditation.
In Vedic culture, sandalwood essential oil and paste are applied to devotees' foreheads as a tilaka, a symbol of devotion and divine protection.
- Traditional Medicine:
In Ayurvedic medicine, sandalwood has been used to treat a variety of conditions, including skin infections, fever and inflammation. Its soothing aroma is also used in therapies to relieve anxiety and stress.
- Use in Cosmetics and Perfumery:
Since ancient times, sandalwood has been a key ingredient in perfumery because of its unique fragrance, which is long-lasting and blends well with other aromas. In ancient India, sandalwood paste was also used as a natural cosmetic and a luxury offering.
History of Exploitation and Threat of Extinction
The extraordinary value of white sandalwood led to its overexploitation over the centuries. In India, where sandalwood was abundant, it became a highly sought-after commodity in international trade, particularly during the colonial era. Sandalwood timber and essential oil were exported in large quantities to Europe, the Middle East and other parts of Asia, where they were valued for both their aromatic properties and medicinal applications.
This high level of exploitation, combined with illegal logging and the tree's slow growth rate, has brought Santalum album to the brink of extinction. Today, white sandalwood is classified as a vulnerable species on the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) Red List.
Conservation Efforts and Current Production
In response to the drastic decline in sandalwood populations, the governments of India and Nepal have introduced strict regulations on sandalwood logging and export, permitting only the harvesting of mature trees or those that have died naturally, and controlling trade through government permits to prevent illegal exploitation. Reforestation and sustainable management projects have also been launched in several regions to restore sandalwood populations, including planting new trees and educating local communities about the importance of conservation and sustainable resource use. Today, much sandalwood essential oil comes from controlled plantations where trees are grown in conditions that mimic their natural environment, ensuring a sustainable harvest and allowing trees to mature fully before harvesting. In addition, because Santalum album is expensive and difficult to obtain, sandalwood oils from other species, such as Santalum spicatum from Australia, have been developed as alternatives that, although not identical in chemical composition, can offer similar aromatic and therapeutic properties.
You are looking at a collector's rarity, which you should only acquire if you truly understand what it is. It is a journey back in time, straight to Nepal, transporting you to one of those small shops that held hidden treasures available to a fortunate few, far removed from the adulterations and substitutes that surround us today.

Me emociona.
