Description
Like other citrus trees, the bitter orange tree reached Europe from Asia. It was introduced into Spain by the Arabs in the eleventh century and planted for ornamental purposes as well as for its exquisite, fragrant blossom. The flowers of citrus trees are known in Spanish as azahar, a word of Arabic origin meaning white flower.
The therapeutic virtues of this tree have long been known. It forms part of the natural pharmacopoeia of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda.
Orange blossom essential oil is also known as Neroli in honour of the Princess of Nerola (Anne-Marie de la Trémoille). Passionate about this flower, she used its essential oil as perfume, bringing Neroli fragrance to the European courts in the late seventeenth century.
Orange blossom essential oil is one of the notes most prized by perfumers. It can be found in some of the most famous perfumes, such as Chanel nº 5 and Ysatis by Givenchy.
The intoxicating aroma of orange blossom captivates with its cheerful, sparkling notes. In some cases, it can awaken a real sense of euphoria. It is comforting for those seeking consolation or needing relief from deep sadness. It is particularly useful when dealing with loss or going through grief.
People with low self-esteem who often doubt themselves can benefit from this aroma.
The aroma of orange blossom essential oil is particularly useful for women who have become disconnected from their femininity and creativity. It is also a great help during the menopause for balancing hormones and emotions.
Orange blossom essential oil has considerable therapeutic value. Its properties are numerous, but its high cost tends to limit its use to very specific applications, particularly relieving nervous disorders and providing cosmetic and neurocosmetic care.
The essential oil is safe to use provided the instructions are followed.
It may be used during pregnancy from the third month onwards and while breastfeeding, through inhalation and skin application.
It is also suitable for babies and children at doses appropriate for them.
